Sadhguru: Ravana was a fierce devotee of Shiva and there are many stories about them. A devotee shouldn’t become great, but he was a great devotee. He came to Kailash all the way from down south – I want you to just imagine walking all the way – and began to sing Shiva’s praises. He had a drum which he used to set the beat and composed 1008 verses extempore, which is called the Shiva Tandava Stotram.
Shiva was so pleased and enamoured listening to this music. As he sang, slowly, Ravana started climbing Kailash from its Southern Face. When Ravana was almost on top, and with Shiva still engrossed in this music, Parvati saw this man climbing up.
There is space only for two people on top! So Parvati tried to bring Shiva out of his musical rapture. She said, “This man is coming all the way up!” But Shiva was too engrossed in the music and poetry. Then finally, Parvati managed to bring him out of being enthralled, and when Ravana reached the peak, Shiva just pushed him off with his feet. Ravana went sliding down the South Face of Kailash. They say his drum was dragging behind him as he slid down and it left a furrow on the mountain all the way down. If you look at the South Face, you will see a wedge-like scar in the center going straight down.
It is a little inappropriate to distinguish or to discriminate between one face of Kailash and the other, but the South Face is dear to us because Agastya Muni merged into the South Face. It is just a South Indian prejudice that we like the South Face and I think it is the most beautiful face! It is definitely the whitest face because it is very snowy there.
In many ways it is the most intense face but very few people go to the South Face. It is far less accessible and involves a more difficult route than the other faces, and only certain type of people go there.
Shiva Tandava Stotram – English Lyrics and Meaning
With his neck consecrated by the flow of water that flows from his hair, And on his neck a snake, which is hung like a garland, And the Damaru drum that emits the sound “Damat Damat Damat Damat”, Lord Shiva did the auspicious dance of Tandava. May he give prosperity to all of us.
Jata kata hasambhrama bhramanilimpanirjhari Vilolavichivalarai virajamanamurdhani Dhagadhagadhagajjva lalalata pattapavake Kishora chandrashekhare ratih pratikshanam mama
I have a deep interest in Shiva Whose head is glorified by the rows of moving waves of the celestial Ganga river, Which stir in the deep well of his hair in tangled locks. Who has the brilliant fire burning on the surface of his forehead, And who has the crescent moon as a jewel on his head.
May my mind seek happiness in Lord Shiva, In whose mind all the living beings of the glorious universe exist, Who is the companion of Parvati (daughter of the mountain king), Who controls unsurpassed adversity with his compassionate gaze, Which is all-pervading And who wears the Heavens as his raiment.
May I find wonderful pleasure in Lord Shiva, who is the advocate of all life, With his creeping snake with its reddish brown hood and the shine of its gem on it Spreading variegated colors on the beautiful faces of the Goddesses of the Directions, Which is covered by a shimmering shawl made from the skin of a huge, inebriated elephant.
May Lord Shiva give us prosperity, Who has the Moon as a crown, Whose hair is bound by the red snake-garland, Whose footrest is darkened by the flow of dust from flowers Which fall from the heads of all the gods – Indra, Vishnu and others.
May we obtain the riches of the Siddhis from the tangled strands Shiva’s hair, Who devoured the God of Love with the sparks of the fire that burns on his forehead, Which is revered by all the heavenly leaders, Which is beautiful with a crescent moon.
My interest is in Lord Shiva, who has three eyes, Who offered the powerful God of Love to fire. The terrible surface of his forehead burns with the sound “Dhagad, Dhagad …” He is the only artist expert in tracing decorative lines on the tips of the breasts of Parvati, the daughter of the mountain king.
May Lord Shiva give us prosperity, The one who bears the weight of this universe, Who is enchanting with the moon, Who has the celestial river Ganga Whose neck is dark as midnight on a new moon night, covered in layers of clouds.
I pray to Lord Shiva, whose neck is bound with the brightness of the temples hanging with the glory of fully bloomed blue lotus flowers, Which look like the blackness of the universe. Who is the slayer of Manmatha, who destroyed the Tripura, Who destroyed the bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice, Who destroyed the demon Andhaka, who is the destroyer of the elephants, And who has overwhelmed the God of death, Yama.
I pray to Lord Siva, who has bees flying all around because of the sweet Scent of honey coming from the beautiful bouquet of auspicious Kadamba flowers, Who is the slayer of Manmatha, who destroyed the Tripura, Who destroyed the bonds of worldly life, who destroyed the sacrifice, Who destroyed the demon Andhaka, who is the destroyer of the elephants, And who has overwhelmed the God of death, Yama.
Shiva, whose dance of Tandava is in tune with the series of loud sounds of drum making the sound “Dhimid Dhimid”, Who has fire on his great forehead, the fire that is spreading out because of the breath of the snake, wandering in whirling motions in the glorious sky.
Drushadvichitratalpayor bhujanga mauktikasrajor Garishtharatnaloshthayoh suhrudvipakshapakshayoh Trushnaravindachakshushoh prajamahimahendrayoh Sama pravartayanmanah kada sadashivam bhaje
When will I be able to worship Lord Sadashiva, the eternally auspicious God, With equanimous vision towards people or emperors, Towards a blade of grass and a lotus, towards friends and enemies, Towards the most precious gem and a lump of dirt, Toward a snake or a garland and towards the varied forms of the world?
Kada nilimpanirjhari nikujnjakotare vasanh Vimuktadurmatih sada shirah sthamajnjalim vahanh Vimuktalolalochano lalamabhalalagnakah Shiveti mantramuchcharan sada sukhi bhavamyaham
When I can be happy, living in a cave near the celestial river Ganga, Bringing my hands clasped on my head all the time, With my impure thoughts washed away, uttering the mantra of Shiva, Devoted to the God with a glorious forehead and with vibrant eyes?
Imam hi nityameva muktamuttamottamam stavam Pathansmaran bruvannaro vishuddhimeti santatam Hare gurau subhaktimashu yati nanyatha gatim Vimohanam hi dehinam sushankarasya chintanam
Anyone who reads, remembers and recites this stotra as stated here Is purified forever and obtains devotion in the great Guru Shiva. For this devotion, there is no other way or refuge. Just the mere thought of Shiva removes the delusion.
3.If you are standing in the control of the lord come and accept the mud and incense,
But if you are standing as a slave for only food, we would not accept you in our group,
Because for twenty one generations we did not have any stain and we sing , “many more divine years,”
For very many years more to the Lord who destroyed the Lanka occupied by Rakshasas.
4.Those who are interested to join our group , before you are put in the cremation ground ,
Please come and enter our group and join us quickly before crossing the limit ,
And let those who have devotion among you recite “Om Namo Narayanaya”
So that the villages and cities do understand it properly and sing “Many more divine u years”
5.The Lord Rishikesa became the lord of several worlds and completely,
Destroyed the crowds of clan of Auras and Rakshasas and you ,
Are in the clan who do service to him and so please come , salute , dance,
And chant his thousand names avoiding your old habit of leaving him after seeking ,
And then say to him “Several years and several thousands of years.”
6.The seven generations of me, my father, his father , his father , his father,
And his father and grand father have come from one path to the next,
So that we can do service and sing “Several years and several thousand years “,
To relieve him for killing his enemy after taking the form of a lion,
On the festival day of Thiruonam at the time of the dusk.
7.BY the unified luster of the place of the divine wheel which gives out red light ,
Which is greater than fire, for several generations we have come for doing service to,
The powerful God who held the divine wheel , which rotated and caused ,
Blood to pour out from the thousand shoulders of Bana,
Who came for fighting with aid of illusion, and we sing “several years” to him.
8.That God gave me high quality food with ghee , several constant assistances,
Betel leaves and nuts from his divine hands apart from ornament for the neck,
Golden globes for the ears and very good quality sandal paste to apply on my body,
So that I would become a good being and I wish “several years” to him,
Who has on his flag Garuda who is the enemy of the hooded serpent.
9.Wearing the yellow silk apparel that you wore and removed , eating food left by you .
Wearing the Thulasi garland which was once worn by you is done by your slaves like us,
And all these actions which are practiced everywhere are well completed by you ,
Who takes rest on bed of Adhi sesha who lies sown with his hoods ,
On the festival day of Thiruonam and we sing “several years”.
10.When on that day on which we wrote and told you, “Oh Lord we are your slaves”,
From that day all the people of our home who are serving you , got freed and got uplifted,
And from that good day you appeared in Mathura and broke the bow of Kamsa ,
And from the day you jumped on the head of serpent with five hoods and danced,
We were telling you “Several years.”
11.Oh Lord Narayana , like the selva Nambi who does not have any bad character ,
Who is the lord of Thirukoshtiyur which is the gem of this world ,
And who is immersed in the thought that he is the servant of the lord,
I am also your old servant , Oh Lord who is divinely pure in many ways ,
And I would chant “Om namo Naryanaya” in the very proper way ,
And also would chant several of your names and I would say “several years” to you.
12.The Vishnu Chitha of Thiruvilliputhur who wrote these words about,
The divinely pure one , the lord who resides in the divine abode ,
And the lord who wielded the bow called Saranga
Wanted auspiciousness to happen forever to those who chant
These without any break for a very long time and that good time would surround
Those who chant “Om Namo Narayanaya” and keep on praising him for a very long time.
Periya aazhwar-- He is one of the most revered saint or Aazhwaar[as they are known in Tamil] of the twelve aazhwaars ,who contributed greatly to Sri Vaishnavism by writing beautiful verses soaked in deep devotion on Narayana [Maha Vishnu] in Tamil.
He lived between 7 th and 8 th century AD in Srivalliputhur , which is a small town in present Tamilnadu and he was known as Vishnu Chithar. He wrested a bag full of gold by winning a debate in a Pandyan King's court at Madurai with other sects and religions and established the primacy of Narayana , over other gods. The ruler honoured the saint and conferred on him the tittle --Periya azhwaar.
Periya azhwaar is also famous for being the father of Andal , the only woman Sri vaishnavaite saint. He has to his credit nearly 500 hymns .The most famous and popular of them all is the body of hymns of 12 verses blessing Narayana with several hundred crore years of reign and supremacy .
' "Pallandu Pallandu Palla Kodi Noor Andu " is the beginning of the verse in Tamil.
Apart from Thiru Pallandu , he has written 461 verses codified under the heading 'Thirumozhi', which mainly seek to portray the experience of Yashodha as the the young mother of Sri Krishna through his infancy to his boyhood. These are the experiences of Yashodha as divined by Periya azhwaar which are expounded in touching verses. Thirumozhi also contain verses praising temples that have enshrined Maha vishnu .
Though periya azhwar is not the earliest of Azhwars , it is his hymns /Pasurams that Nalayira divya Prabhandam starts with , proclaiming his eminence and the honour accorded to him and his works by the codifier of hymns of aazhwars - Sri Nathamuni in 10 th century AD.

Introduction to third, fourth and fifth Pasurams,
In the 3rd, 4th and 5 th pasurums Periyaazhwar invites three types of devotees to support him in his endeavour to sing Bhagwan's praises,so as to enable him to share his enthusiasm and to enlarge devotion to Narayana to as many persons as possible and thus deepen his satisfaction in his spiritual experience and servitude to Bhagwan. The following are the three types of devotees who have been recognised and classified in the much earlier and sacred religious text --Bhagwad Gita. The first type of persons are those whose devotion to Bhagwan is solely for acquiring wealth.
The second type of devotees are such persons who aim to free their atmas from recurring cycle of birth and death and reach Kaivalyam or self satisfying bliss.
The third type of devotees are those who ceaselessly endeavour to attain parama padam or the sacred feet of the original cause of the universe and hope to be constantly at his service.
Pasuram 3 In this pasuram Periyaazhwar invites the third type of devotees.
All of you ,who are firm and determined in your ceaseless devotion to reach the sacred feet of one who is the cause of life and have resolved to be in servitude to him for eternity ,kindly participate whole heartedly in the on going festival of the deity by inaugurating it, by fetching fragrant soil.
We, who spend our lives serving Bhagwan, will not allow all such persons who have enslaved themselves to outsiders in order to satisfy their material wants and greed.
Our honour and prestige rests in the fact that in seven generations preceding us we have no stain attached to our name nor was our character in disrepute.
Let us all pray together that Bhagwan who annihilated all the rakshas living in Lanka , with the help of his army, retains his auspiciousness for years to come and that his sacred feet is protected for crores of lakhs of years .
Pasuram -4 In this pasuram peryaazhwar invites the second type of devotees.
Before your efforts to reach the self satisfying land of no return --Kaivalyam, fructifies by separating the cream like atma from the mortal body ,
Make haste to join our group of devotees and then announce to the country and the cities the good tidings and auspicious benefits that you would be in receipt of by chanting Namo Narayana , along with the devotees.
And also pray for Bhagwan's reign to continue for several crores of centuries without a break
Pasuram--5.
In this pasuran peryazwar invites the first type of devote to join his group.
All those persons who are aspiring for wealth and therefore meditating constantly on Hrishikesa , the Lord of universe who is the destroyer of enemies , demons and rakshas,
Discard this materialistic pursuit of yours and join the devotees who are at all times worshipping his sacred feet and chant his thousand names along with us and gain spiritual wealth,
And pray that Bhagwan's sacred feet be well protected for several years, nay for several thousands of years and for crores of lakhs of years.
[In this pasuram the third type of devotees whose aim is to reach Bhagwans residence and to serve him till eternity , give the following reply to peryaazhwar's invitation to join his devotional group.]
For the past seven generations which comprises of my father, his father, my grand father's father, my great grand father and his father and grand father have been serving Bhagwan.
We will sing and pray that Narsimha who destroyed Hiranyakasupu in the dusk of the sacred day of Thiruvonam , be well protected for many years and many thousands of years to come and for crores of lakhs of years to come .
[This Pasuram refers to change of heart of those seeking self enjoyment of atma to servitude to Bhagwan's feet]
Now we have emblazoned our shoulders with help of the smouldering chakra symbol and thus bear his Sudarshana chakra's brilliance which is more radiant than fire and is deep red in hue.
And our entire family is serving the conqueror -Sri Krishna ,who annihilated the thousand shouldered wicked Vanasuran ,by whirling and aiming his chakra ,making that asuras blood gush out and flow rapidly.
And we will sing Bhagwan's praises and pray for the protection of his sacred feet for crores of lakhs of years .
Pasuram--8 [In this pasuram the first type of devotees relate how they are serving bhagwan after enjoying the wealth bestowed by Swami on them ]
Neiyedai nallodhor sorum niyadhamum thanni sevagamum Kai yadai kaayum khazhuthukku poonodu kadhukku kundalamum , Mei yida nallodhor saanthamum thandu yennai velluyirakavalla , Pai yudai nagapagai kodiyanukku pallandu kooruvene!
O Swamy! You bestowed upon us large quantities of rice and ghee in equal measures and blessed us daily from the place of your repose, You also gave us betel leaf and arcenut as well as ornaments to be worn , like chains for the neck and bracelets to adorn the hand, and big ear rings for the ears. You also gave special and high quality sandal wood paste to smear on our bodies as desired by us. You also made pure satvic knowledge to flow upon householders like us. One who has the arch enemy of cobra ]in his flag , i pray that your sacred self and feet be well protected for several crores of lakhs of years to come.
Note : Arch enemy of serpent cobra is garuda the white crested eagle the vehicle of Maha vishnu
[This pasuram is sung by gyani's the third type of devotees]
We wear the golden yellow vastras [garments] known as Pithambaram , worn and discarded by you We eat that which has been partaken and left over by you and adorn ourselves with the discarded garland of fragrant flowers which have adorned you first . Though we have performed all such duties as directed by you but are still dissatisfied
Fear grips us for the safety of your beautiful form reclining on the serpent Adisesha and therefore pray on Thiruvonam , the star on the day of your birth, that your sacred self and feet be well protected for crores of years to come .
[The kaivalya devotees , the second type of devotees admit to thier reformation ]
O Swamy, the day we surrendered to your sacred feet that day itself we and our families were freed from the quest of self enjoyment --kaivalyam You apperaed on the day of Rohini star [asSri Krishna ]in Mathura and bent and broke the bow in Kamsa's arsenal. You also jumped on to the head of five hooded serpent , We pray that your sacred feet is well protected for several crores of lakhs of years .
